Types of grants

Below is a description of each type of request:

Educational grants

Funding or in-kind support to a third-party entity (for example, a third-party programme organiser or a training institution) to reduce the costs of providing independent continuing medical education. An educational grant is not offered for commercial sponsorship opportunities. Educational grants are available only to support the following circumstances or events:

• Funding or in-kind support used to support third-party educational course/meeting/conference.
  
  
• Funding to support general fundraising efforts for organisations that align with business strategy.

Third-party sponsorships and exhibits

A payment or in-kind support provided to a third party in exchange for advertising or promotional opportunities for the company (for example, a company exhibit at a third-party programme).

Guidelines for appropriate sponsorship support include the following:
 

• Funding is used to offset general course expenses.
  
  
• May include the opportunity to present industry session, workshop, roundtable, dinner sponsorship, satellite symposium, labs etc.
  
  
• May provide additional benefits such as a list of registrants before the event or funding will be used to offset a meal.
  
  
• Supporters listed as "Sponsor" on all acknowledgements.

Fellowship grant

Funding to institutions to support fellowship programmes.

Guidelines for appropriate fellowship grants include the following:

• A restricted grant provided to institutions to support fellowship programmes by funding expenses directly related to the fellow. Funding may cover reasonable costs to the fellowship programme required to provide educational support (can include salaries, educational materials, and cost associated with labs. Our goal is to enhance learning opportunities and supplement education for the year of fellowship. In countries with respective transparency requirements, all support is reportable as an indirect transfer of value to the fellow in accordance with applicable laws and codes of practice.
  
  
• Fellowship grants are provided solely to eligible institutions or organisations, not to individuals. Smith+Nephew does not participate in or influence the criteria for selection of individual fellows, which remains the sole responsibility of the receiving institution.

Charitable donation

Funding or in-kind support (volunteering) for a bona fide charitable purpose and will be made only by Smith+Nephew to charitable organisations or other non-profit entities with bona fide charitable or philanthropic purpose.

Humanitarian donation

Donation of Smith+Nephew products via healthcare institutions or non-profit organisations to support access to healthcare, and where all of the following additional requirements (to the extent applicable) are met::

• The request is submitted by healthcare institutions or non-profit entities on the patient's behalf due to data privacy requirements and the request should anonymise any personally identifiable data related to the patient.
  
  
• The requestor must confirm the patient has no government or private insurance for the procedure.
  
  
• The organisation requesting the donation will not seek reimbursement for any costs or expenses related to the procedure.
  
  
• The surgeon is providing his/her services free of charge.
  
  
• The hospital is providing their services free of charge.

Medical missions

• We ask for requests to be submitted at least 12 (twelve) months prior to the mission start date.

General support for individual patient donation

• We ask for requests to be submitted at least 60 (sixty) days prior to the event date.

Delegate support sponsorship

Support given to institutions, societies or third-party conference organisers to fund the HCPs expenses, such as registration, accommodation, travel and meals associated with the third-party conference. In providing support for Delegate Support Sponsorship, Smith+Nephew does not and will not have any role in the selection of HCPs who participate in these third-party conferences and will not provide financial support to HCPs directly.

Review process

Each request is reviewed for compliance with our support criteria and policies, alignment with the company's mission and available resources. Sponsorships, fellowships, grants and donations are not awarded based on the use, purchase, or recommendation of Smith+Nephew company products. We report all third-party support provided in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Only completed and submitted applications will be eligible for review. Once the request has been submitted, it will be reviewed by the appropriate team for potential support based on satisfaction with our guidelines and requirements, alignment to current business strategy and available resources. You will be notified of the status of your request.
