Smith+Nephew commits to net zero emissions

Smith+Nephew (LSE:SN,NYSE:SNN), the global medical technology business, today announces its commitment to achieve net zero emissions across its operations globally by 2045.

Roland Diggelmann, Chief Executive Officer, Smith+Nephew, said

“As a healthcare company, Smith+Nephew’s purpose is to restore and promote health and wellbeing. We believe that this applies not just to the benefits our products deliver to patients, but also to the wider health of the planet and society. Our net zero pledge will help each of us view our actions here and now through the lens of the long-term good we can do.”

Smith+Nephew’s roadmap is to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by 2040 and Scope 3 GHGs by 2045. We are on track to achieve a 70% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHGs by 2025 compared to a 2019 baseline. Most recently our facilities in Memphis, US, our single largest location, began sourcing all electricity from renewable wind energy, accounting for around 40% of Smith+Nephew’s total electricity usage.

Andrya Clark, Senior Director Sustainability, Smith+Nephew, said

“Smith+Nephew is proud of its sustainability strategy and how we are working to create an ever more positive impact on our communities, our planet and through our products. We want to challenge ourselves to find new ways to make a meaningful difference. Our net zero commitment raises the bar and is the right thing to do as a responsible business.”
